The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a world famous beer hall in the city center of Munich, Germany.
This inn may be the world's most famous inn originally built in 1589 by the Bavarian duke William V to avoid buying beer for his troops from Lower Saxony. The general public was admitted only in 1828 by then king Louis I. The building was completely remodeled in 1897, when the brewery moved to the suburbs. In the bombing of WW II, everything but the main inn ("Schwemme") was destroyed; it took until 1958 to be rebuilt.
Credit cards are becoming more and more accepted in Germany, but living in the Grafenwoehr/Vilseck/Hohenfels area it’s strongly recommended to not solely rely on using credit cards! Probably due to the rather low density of population and/or puchase power in this area, most stores pass on credit card acceptance.
In bigger cities like Nuernberg, Regensburg or Munich, the usage of credit cards is more common.
German beer is highly diverse and an important part of Germany's culture. There are more than 1300 breweries in Germany, the highest number of breweries in the world. The German beer market is a bit sheltered from the rest of the world beer market by the German brewers' adherence to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot (purity requirement) dating from 1516, according to which the only allowed ingredients of beer are "Wasser (water), Hopfen (hops) und (Gersten-)Malz (barley-malt)". Many breweries worldwide adopted the Reinheitsgebot for their own beers. After its invention, cultured yeast became the fourth legal ingredient. Through the agreement (which was law up to 1988 but is still adhered to by virtually all German brewers), beers from Germany tend to have a good reputation for their quality. The Germans are behind only the Czechs and the Irish in their per capita consumption of beer.
